Tenuta Le Calcinaie is a beautiful small estate,situated just 3 km from the town of San Gimignano (in the province of Siena). The Estate takes its name after the composition of the soil of this area:in fact layers of limestone, originating from marine deposits of the Pliocene era, are found at half a meter underground.
Simone Santini, a passionate wine technician, is the owner; he planted his first hectare with the vines of Vernaccia, the vineyard “Vigna ai Sassi” in 1986 and in 1989 he planted 7,000 square meters with red grape varieties. The 1993 vintage of Teodoro, 100% Sangiovese was the first wine that Simone produced (only one barrique was bottled), followed by the 1995 vintage of Vernaccia di San Gimignano. The total vineyard extension is now 12 hectares and the average production is 70,000 bottles/year. Since 1995 viticulture follows the organic protocol, the vineyards and the wines are certified organic according to the EU and NOP regulations.
In 2006 the new cellar was completed, it is build underground so that the temperature is kept even, where the wines can mature away from thermal changes and follow natural aging.
The composition of the soil - limestone layers topped by layers of clay, sand and fossil - produces minerals, structed and flavorful whites. The delicate skin of the Vernaccia grape is protected from the sun by the north-eastern exposure of the vineyards.
The red grapes are grown on the higher part of the Estate and the soils are skeletal and made up of brown and red clay, this enhances the power and the colour in the wines. The altitude of the vineyards is between 200 and 250 meters above sea level.
Simone has dedicated his whole life to create and care for his own vineyards and wines.
We produce a Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva DOCG, Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG, Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva and four IGT proprietary wines. “Ingredienti: Uva” is a proprietary wine, Sangiovese 100% without the use of sulphites.
